What the hell is a technical marketer?

What do you do?

I create cross-channel marketing strategies that can be executed in many forms, these are: Websites, Portals, Social Media Advertising, Microsites, Automated email incentives, landing pages, Mobile and Tablet Applications, Banners and Tablet Ads, gamification experiential displays.

What challenges do you face?

Mostly, like anyone, it’s achieving balance. Not enough of one thing and too much of the other. From a work perspective, I find that it is mainly about education vs production. Our work environment and technology is ever changing and it sometimes hard even for a geek like me to keep up much less MDs and CEOs.  Working with stakeholders to solve their particular problem depends on so many variables that the balance can be hard to even conceive of let alone manage.

Why do you do it?

I like helping people, I like working with stakeholders to solve their particular problem and it depends on so many variables that the balance can be hard to even conceive of let alone manage. However more often than not if expectations are set early and there is unbiased alignment across a team, there can be a resolution.

How do you overcome these challenges?

I ask enough probing questions about the project. This is so there is no stone left unturned, no ambiguity, everything is documented and tracked and to the extent, everyone is protected from scope creep or project fallout.

Where do you live?

I live in Essex with my beautiful wife Laura and children Jonas and Freya.

What do you think about the future of the online world?

By jove! That is a big question! But I do think about this…a lot. I think about the way we interact with devices what it does to us and for us. Psychologically we are changing and adapting to hardware, yet we are either catching up to our imaginations or problem-solving capabilities with software. It’s only a matter of time, 10 years maybe, where we can clearly see the confluence of hardware, software, and imagination. But it is certainly one of the most interesting and dynamic industries to work in.
